Injuries in Horses

Acute injuries such as strains, bruises, sprains, tendon inflammation, or ruptured tendons cause cell damage. The acute phase lasts as long as the injured area remains warm, usually no more than three days. During this phase, cooling the injury is crucial. For mild muscle or tendon injuries, you can use Vertargil (green clay). We also offer bandages and dressing materials from Gamgee and Powerflex, which can be used for:

  • Supporting muscle, tendon, and joint injuries
  • Securing wounds before transporting your horse to a veterinary clinic
  • Providing temporary care while awaiting the vet

Applying a Bandage

Apply the bandage like a wrap, ensuring it’s firmly secured. To protect it from chewing or pulling, you can cover it with a wool bandage for extra durability.

Wound Care

Horses are prone to injuries on their legs, face, and body. Small wounds can be treated at home by first disinfecting the area and then applying a suitable wound ointment. At Vetsend, we offer a wide range of wound care products, including:

  • Disinfectants such as Dettol and Betadine
  • Wound ointments like Vetramil, Dermiel, and L-Mesitran – effective for both fresh and older wounds while helping to prevent excessive scar tissue formation

Need Advice?

If you’re unsure about how to treat an injury or wound, we always recommend consulting your vet.
