What do you use a flea comb for?

Fleas are not always easy to see with the naked eye. Fleas are masters at hiding on your pet. With a flea comb, you can detect any fleas present on your cat. A flea comb is a special comb with teeth that are very close together, so that a flea or its eggs get stuck in the comb.

What flea combs are there?

There are different types of combs. The difference is mainly in the way they are handled. There are combs with a long handle and combs without handles. Which one you choose depends mainly on your own preference. With a long coat, a handle is nice to have more grip. For a short coat, a comb without a handle will do just fine. The teeth of a flea comb can also be more or less spaced apart. For example, you also have the double combs with a finer and coarser comb, such as the Mikki All Plastic Flea Comb.

How do you use a flea comb on your cat?

The idea is to use a flea comb to comb as close to the skin as possible. Do this especially under the armpits, groin and on the back near the base of the tail. This is where fleas mainly live. Comb your cat over a white surface. If your cat has fleas, you may find 2 things in the comb:

  • Live fleas
  • Black granules

Live fleas can be pressed to death with your nail or put in a bowl of water. The black granules can be flea droppings. You can recognise them by putting them on a moist white tissue or kitchen paper. A flea poo consists of dried blood and gives off brownish-red.

What should you do if your cat has fleas?

If you have found fleas or flea droppings on your cat, it is important to take the right measures to get rid of them again.

To do this, choose a suitable flea treatment for your cat, such as our spot on flea treatments, flea and tick tablets, flea shampoos or flea collars.
