The type of feed you choose depends on various factors such as age, breed, and workload. A horse needs roughage as its basic nutrition. Most horses receive hay as their primary source of roughage, which provides sufficient fiber and nutrients.

Horse Pellets

Horse pellets contain a mix of vitamins, minerals, and proteins that your horse needs. There are different types available.

Basic Pellets

Basic pellets are often used for leisure horses with light workloads. These pellets help supplement vitamins and minerals. Leisure horses and horses at rest require adapted feed to prevent weight gain and to meet their energy requirements appropriately.

Breeding Pellets

Broodmares and foals have different nutritional needs, and there are specially formulated feeds available for them. These products provide the additional nutrients and energy these horses need. Foal pellets also have a modified structure to make them easy to eat.

Sport Pellets

For active sport horses, sport pellets are often recommended to provide extra energy, contributing to fitness and muscle development.

Muesli

Horse muesli serves the same purpose as pellets and is used to supplement a roughage-based diet. The ingredients in muesli are less processed than in pellets, which can make it more palatable for some horses.

Mash

Pellets and muesli are mainly used as concentrated feed. Additionally, mash can be used as a supplementary feed. Because mash is served with warm water, it is more palatable. It is especially used for sick or older horses.

Supplements

Nutritional supplements can be provided when there are issues with your horse’s condition, behavior, or appearance. In cases of high performance or for older horses, a deficiency can arise despite the intake of concentrated and roughage feed. In such situations, a supplement can be added.
