Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is one of the most common eye infections and is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. Conjunctivitis is usually stimulated by dust particles and can be recognised by red, irritated eyes. Cats can also contract conjunctivitis after fighting with another cat, if the eye gets damaged.
A cataract is the clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye, obstructing the passage of light, which can lead to blurry vision and can even cause blindness over time. A grey lens is a sign of a cataract. Other symptoms include a change in your cat’s behaviour due to reduced vision, such as bumping into objects.
Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns towards the eye, causing eyelashes to rub against the cornea (front of the eye) and irritating it. Ectropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns outwards, leaving the inner eyelid surface exposed and an increased chance of bacterial damage to the cornea. Both of these eye conditions can be repaired by surgery.
It is possible for cats to contract the felines herpes virus. If your cat has the virus, it can spread to the nose, tonsils and ocular nerve, which can lead to an infection of the eyelid and very watery eyes. You can control the disease by supplying your cat with the right food and vaccinations.
Some cats can eventually suffer from dry eyes. Luckily, this can easily be treated using eye drops, such as Hyaluvisk Drops, available online at Vetsend. These are moisturising, lubricating eye drops without any preservatives and adjust to the pH levels of your cat’s tears, or lacrimal fluid. They can be used daily.
You can regularly clean your cat’s eyes to lower the chances of contracting eye infections. Vetsend offer a variety of eye cleansers with soothing qualities that are also suitable for cleaning eyelids and removing tear stains.
You can recognise eye problems and infections in cats by swollen eyes or noticeable itching or pain. Cats might also have an increase in tears, red or dirty eyes with purulent discharge.
If you suspect your cat is suffering from a (severe) eye condition, please contact you veterinarian. The products offered at Vetsend are generally used as maintenance products and won’t provide results for (severe) eye problems.
