Why is my cat losing its fur?

Written by Samantha |

Shedding is a natural process for the cat. Your cat will moult twice a year. This has to do with the alternation of summer and winter. Many cats are kept indoors, so they don’t experience this weather change as much as outdoor cats. This can lead to a kind of chronic moult in which some hair is found all year round.

How do I help my cat with its coat care?

Your cat will try to keep itself as clean as possible. By washing with his tongue, he will remove loose hairs from his fur himself. Especially during the moulting period, it is nice to help your cat with this. A good brush and comb are important here. With a comb, such as the Trixie Metal Comb, you can detect tangles in the coat. This is especially recommended for semi-long-haired and long-haired cats. You can use a brush to remove loose hair. The FURminator for Cats is a good example of this!

Oh no, a hairball! What now?

Your cat grooms itself with its tongue. He swallows a lot of hair that way. Sometimes there are too many hairs, which can result in that your cat needs to vomit. Sometimes they are so concentrated that they look like cat poop, other times they can look more like heaps. Especially long-haired cats that are kept indoors can suffer more from hairballs. Regular brushing is then a necessity. An appointment with the groomer can also be a good option for the more difficult coats. If your cat has a lot of hair problems, you can also support him or her to dispose of the hair through the faeces. This can be done by giving a laxative agent, such as the Kat-a-Lax. There is also food against hairballs, such as the Hill’s Science Plan – Feline Mature Adult – Hairball Control.

How can I improve my cat’s coat quality?

The moulting period can have a significant impact on the overall coat quality. Taking care of and maintaining a healthy coat and skin is an important task for the cat and most cats spent a lot of time washing and maintaining their coat. The formation of hairs continues indefinitely and this costs a lot of energy. In periods of excessive hair loss, such as the moulting period, it can sometimes be nice to give your cat a boost with a supplement that helps to maintain the coat condition. Examples of products are the Bogavital Shiny Coat Cat, Dermazyme Zinc and the Dermoscent Keravita.
