Kittens who are raised by their mother will almost always use a litter box and do not require any instructions on how to do so. However, in the rare occasion your kitten needs a helping hand, you can easily place your kitten into the litter tray. By grabbing its paws and making a scratching movement, your cat will soon understand how to use a litter box accordingly.

How to choose the right cat litter box

Closed litter box

Some cats require more privacy than others. A closed litter box can feel more comfortable and familiar than an open litter box. At Vetsend, you can find a large selection of enclosed litter boxes for cats, from basic and practical to innovative and luxurious. A few examples are the PeeWee EcoHus, which is a very basic and convenient litter box. In contrast, the Moderna Cat Concept offers a more luxurious and multifunctional cat shelter.

The open litter box

Some cats prefer to have a better overview of their surroundings and, in turn, experience less stress. Well known brands such as PeeWee and Moderna offer a wide range of open cat litter boxes.

Litter boxes with top entrance

There are special designed litter boxes which have an opening on the top side of the litter box. This can be a good fit for cats who prefer to stand while they pee. This also prevents messy cats from spoiling their litter all over the place. Have a look at the Moderna Top Cat Cat Toilet for a high top cat litter box.

Key points

If you want your cat to use the litter box, there are a number of things to take into account.

  • Make sure the litter box is large enough for your cat.
  • Choose a litter box that suits your cat: closed, open or with a top opening.
  • Place the litter box in a designated spot inside the house. If possible, do not place it near the place where your cat drinks or eats. A quiet and undisturbed place would be the best choice.
  • Look for high quality cat litter. Identify your cat’s favourite cat litter. This could be clumping litter, organic litter, grit or wood pellets.
  • Make sure the litter box is filled with sufficient cat litter. Not too much, not too little.
  • Cats are generally clean and hygienic animals. This means that you need to clean your cat’s litter box daily and clean it thoroughly once a week.
  • With several cats in the household, it is a good idea to purchase several litter boxes. This way you can have one private litter box for each cat.
