Salmon oil for dogs and cats

Written by Samantha |

Salmon oil for dogs and fish oil is often mentioned when we talk about our pet's health. Oily fish has been linked to many health benefits, for pets but for humans as well. What makes salmon oil or fish oil contribute to a healthy lifestyle?

What are Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids?

Omega 3 for dogs and cats

Omega 3 are fatty acids and are also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids. There are a few omega 3 fatty acids, such as: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is a vegetable omega-3 fatty acid and cannot be produced within the human body, as they can only be acquired through diet (seeds, nuts vegetable oils). EPA and DHA as commonly known as oily fish acids.

ALA is an essential fatty acid which can not be produced by your pet’s own body. EPA and DHA can be made by your pet’s body, but only in a very small amount. This small amount is not sufficient for a healthy lifestyle. It is therefore important that your dog or cat acquires these important fatty acids through their diet. For example by providing your dog or cat with a food supplement such as Brilliant Salmon Oil.

Omega 6 for dogs and cats

Omega 6 fatty acids are, just like Omega 3, polyunsaturated fatty acids. The best known Omega 6 fatty acid is linoleic acid. This is found in vegetable oils and is unable to be produced by your own body. Other popular omega 6 fatty acids are: arachidonic acid (AA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). AA can be found in eggs, poultry, offal and fish.

Omega 3 and Omega 6 health benefits

Salmon and fish oil can lower risk of heart disease, dementia and cancer in humans. It can also improve mental ability and lower rheumatoid arthritis complaints. But what can it do for your furry friend?

Omega-3 health benefits

Omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the body and support the immunity system. Inflammatory skin reactions and inflammatory reactions in kidneys and joints are slowed down. EPA shows anti-inflammatory effects that respond to osteoarthritis and inhibits the enzyme responsible for joint cartilage degradation. This fatty acid also has a supporting effect on heart and blood vessels and can help cats with chronic kidney failure. In addition, Omega 3 can support companion animals with skin and coat problems and allergies. Fatty Omega 3 acids such as DHA can also have a positive effect on the nervous system including your pet’s brain.

Omega-6 health benefits

Omega 6 fatty acids have a positive effect on your pet’s health. It slows down the production of cholesterol and enhances the immune system.

How many fatty acids does my pet need?

It has been scientifically proven that a right dosage of Omega-3 fatty acids can be beneficial for your pet’s health. Too much Omega 6 can have negative consequences, as this may promote inflammation.

The ideal dosage of Omega 3 fatty acids for your dog is around 40 mg per kg body weight per day. Besides the right dosage, the exact composition of Omega 3 is important. EPA has an effect on all organs, DHA only effects the brain and nervous system.

Omega 3 and Omega 6 ratio

A very important factor when selecting fatty acids for your pet is the ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids given. This should be rightly balanced. Standard diets normally provide sufficient Omega 6. The ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 is normally around 50 to 1.

The most optimal ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 however, is around 4 to 1. When too many Omega 6 fatty acids are given through your pet’s diet, then this means less Omega 3 fatty acids are converted into EPA and DHA. Supplementation of Omega 3 (EPA and DHA) is in this case very important. The most easy way to provide your dog with additional Omega 3 is by using Fish4Dogs Salmon Oil.

What should I choose for my pet?

If you want to be sure you choose a good product for your pet, pay attention for the following points:

  • The amount of Omega-3/EPA/DHA should be described or traceable in mg
  • Pay attention to a low calorie value
  • Fatty acids should be packed in a sealed, taped or dark bottle because of the risk of oxidation of the fats.

Addition of vitamin E

Adding vitamin E to a product containing fish fatty acids helps to protect the oil from decay. Vitamin E also has a beneficial effect on allergies and immune diseases. If the product has added vitamin E, this has a beneficial impact on the (effect) of the fish oil.
