    Urinary tract problems

Dogs often suffer from lower urinary tract diseases. These are diseases that occur in the ureters, the bladder, or the urethra. A major cause of urinary tract problems is the formation of bladder stones. Smaller dogs produce a more concentrated urine and urinate less often than large dogs. As a result, small dogs have a higher risk of bladder stones. If your dog is suffering from bladder stones, your vet will usually prescribe a special diet and/or medication, as well as provide advice for general care.

Royal Canin Urinary S/O Small Dog

Royal Canin has developed a method which makes it possible to determine the S/O Index of a diet. The S/O Index is based on the acidity (pH) of the urine, the urine volume, and the concentration of different components in the urine which can form stones. Thanks to the low S/O Index of Royal Canin Urinary S/O Small Dog, there is a lower risk of developing struvite and calcium oxalate stones.

    Key features

Special pellet size for small dogs up to 10 kg, making it easy to eat and digest. Small dogs have more problems with tartar formation. Royal Canin Urinary S/O Small Dog contains sodium polyphosphate to reduce the formation of tartar. Thanks to its special composition, it can effectively dissolve struvite stones in the body. In addition, acidifying the urine can reduce the occurrence of struvite crystals (fewer available phosphate ions required for struvite formation) and the formation of bladder stones and bacteria. The increase in the urine volume is caused by a slightly increased sodium content (allows for increased moisture absorption), so that the formation of the two most common stones (struvite and calcium oxalate) is limited.

    Recommended for

    • Bacterial cystitis (bladder infection)
    • Dissolving struvite stones
    • Preventing recurrent formation of urinary tract stones (struvite and calcium oxalate)

Please note!: In older animals, it is important to have renal function checked by your veterinarian prior to first use (in relation to slightly increased sodium content).

    Not suitable for

Royal Canin Urinary S/O Small Dog is not suitable for puppies and pregnant or lactating dogs, or dogs suffering from chronic kidney disease, metabolic acidosis, heart failure, taking urine acidifying medication, dogs with (a history of) pancreatitis or hyperlipidaemia. For older animals, it is recommended that you have your pet's renal function checked by your veterinarian on a regular basis.

    Advice

It will take at least 5 to 12 weeks before struvite stones and urinary tract infections disappear (in combination with antibiotics) using this diet food. Once the urinary tract infection is gone, it is still recommended to use this product for another month.

  • Brilliant and recommend by vet after surgery
By Joanne, Wednesday 19 July 2023

I was suggested this product after my wee yorkie kept getting stones in her bladder but this was unfortunately after she had to undergo lifesaving surgery to remove all the stones in her bladder and one that made its way down the urethra track. Since then she has been on this and the wet form as she turns her nose up at the same food day in day out so do one day one and the next day the other. She has been using this now for over 6 years and I’ve had no more stones since then which I’m so grateful for as I would have been lost without her. I would say if you find blood or a stone in your dogs pee to (A) go to the vets and (B) use this as I found it really works well.
