Rubbing, scratching and rolling
Occasional rubbing, scratching and rolling is natural behaviour for horses. Horses with an itch often use rub certain parts of their bodies against fixed obstacles in their direct environment. If this behaviour occurs abnormally frequently, there might be a different cause for it. Abnormally frequent rubbing or scratching can be caused by insect bites, oversensitivity to insects, lice, mites, ticks, skin fungi or an Oxyuris equi-infection. In general, repeated rubbing and scratching leads to self-harm and leaves bald spots.
