Drontal – A Broad Spectrum Wormer
Worms can cause a wide range of clinical symptoms in your cat or dog. In some cases though, the number of worms might be very low, which means that no clinical signs are visible in your pet. This is particularly true for low-level roundworm, tapeworm and whipworm infestations. As the infestation grows, initial signs include weight loss, poor condition, dull coat, anal itching and mild gastrointestinal complaints. This is why worming treatments are part of your pet’s standard care plan and Drontal tablets (for adult dogs and cats) and Drontal Suspension (for puppies) are among the most common types of wormer used. This broad spectrum wormer doesn’t just help eliminate roundworm but also works effectively against tapeworm, whipworm and hookworm in dogs and cats.
Drontal for Dogs
Drontal for Dogs fights roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms and whipworms. Drontal Plus Flavour Bone is suitable for dogs weighing between 2 kg and 20 kg. The tasty tablets have a beef flavour and therefore easy to administer. If your dog does not want to swallow the tablet, then it is possible to crush the tablet and mix in your dog’s food. For large dogs (between 17.5 kg and 70 kg), Drontal Plus XL Flavour is recommended.
Drontal for Cats
Drontal tablets for cats kills roundworms, tapeworms and hookworms. You can administer the tablet in one piece, or mix it in your cat’s food. It is recommended to worm your cat at least four times a year, which is around once every three months. Drontal is also available for larger cats: Drontal Cat XL. A dosage for normal cats is 1 tablet per 4 kg body weight, the right dosage for larger cats is 1 tablet per 6 kg of body weight. Both packages contain 2 tablets.
Drontal for Puppies
Unlike Drontal for cats or dogs, Drontal for puppies is available in liquid form, as opposed to tablets. This product kills important round-, hook- and whipworms. You can treat puppies with Drontal oral suspension from the age of 2 weeks. We recommend that your repeat this worming treatment at the following stages: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks old. After this process, it is recommended to treat your dog monthly until 6 months old and use regular Drontal for Dogs afterwards. Drontal Suspension is specifically designed for young dogs and therefore does not contain Praziquantel.
Tapeworm infections in dogs and cats can be caused by fleas. Therefore, it is very important to treat your pet against fleas with a flea treatment such as Advantage.
When can I start using Drontal for dogs?
It is important to worm your pup regularly, as puppies can contract worms from their mom when being born or while being weaned. As mentioned in the information above, you can start treating your puppy with Drontal from the age of 2 weeks and then repeat every 2 weeks until the age of 12 weeks old. After this intensive worm treatment, you can worm your pup every month until your pup is 6 months old. You should then revert to worming your pup at least every three months.
How often do I need to worm my dog?
Dogs weighing at least 2 kg can use Drontal Tasty Bone tablets and be treated for worms every 3 months (which is 4 times a year). In some cases, more frequent treatment (once a month) is necessary. This can be if you have a working dog that has greater exposure to other animals infected with worms or if your dog spends time around young children. The latter is necessary because children can be more vulnerable to worm infections, for example when they are licked by a dog. If you are not sure how often you should treat your dog, please contact your veterinary surgeon.
When can I start using Drontal for cats?
Drontal for cats can be given to kittens that are at least 6 weeks old and weigh over 2 kg. One Drontal tablet can be given per 4 kg of body weight. The smallest dose available for cats is half a tablet, for cats that weigh 2 kg.
