West Highland White Terrier
The West Highland White Terrier, otherwise called Westie, is from Scotland. The western Highlands, rugged, rocky landscape with its high moors and heaths is often inaccessible and difficult to access. For the hunting of foxes, wild cats, otters and badgers small, robust terriers with short legs were therefore used. The Westie is lively, playful, watchful and alert. The dog is very loyal to its owner and is not easily overwhelmed by anything.
Characteristics
Colour
The Westie has a dual coat: the outer coat is harsh, without curls, while the undercoat is soft and short. These dogs are always white with dark eyes and dark pigment soles, nails, lips and nose.
Approach to training
The uncomplicated and cheerful character of this dog should not be a licence for him to do whatever he wants. A correction in some places is certainly desirable. West Highland White Terriers are sometimes very persistent when it comes to naughty tricks. However, remain consistent and don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by this little dog.
Dog sports
Agility and ball games are very suitable for Westies.
Westies are suitable for owners who:
- Can provide their dogs with plenty of excercise
- Can give the dog enough attention
- Love to play games with their dog
- Are able to educate the dog consistently
