Poodle
The poodle comes in four varieties: the Toy Poodle, the Miniature Poodle, the Medium Poodle and the King Poodle. They are one of the most intelligent breeds and very playful. They are very attached to their owner and are therefore very sensitive to their owner’s emotions. In addition, they are reserved towards strangers and excellent watchdogs. The poodle is also considered a breed of grace and dignity. Originally, this breed was bred as a water dog.
Characteristics
Colour
The poodle has a dense, curly or rough coat and loses almost no hair. The coat is usually one colour, such as black, brown, white, grey or apricot; less common colours include blue, cream and multiple colours on the coat. To maintain the coat properly, it should be trimmed regularly.
External features
Body
The poodle’s body is often firm and longer than the height at the withers. The neck is slightly arched and strong. They have a rounded back and a firm and muscular chest. The ears hang down to the cheeks, and the tail is held upwards.
Approach to the training
The poodle is very eager to work for its owner and loves new challenges. They are very good at obedience training. However, the breed must be given a consistent upbringing; if not, it will explore on its own.
Common symptoms
The breed is prone to various health problems. It is, therefore, wise to visit the vet annually for a check-up. Common health problems include ear infections, plaque, eye and skin conditions, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
Dog sports
Poodles are very intelligent and are widely used for sports, such as agility, doggy dance, hunting or even as police dogs.
Poodles are suitable for owners who:
- Are eager to walk and swim with their dog.
- Want to challenge the dog with training sessions.
- Can spend a lot of time with the dog.
