German Shepherd

The German Shepherd Dog is a medium-sized, well-muscled and powerful dog. It is a shepherd dog that, as the name suggests, originates from Germany. German Shepherds are very loyal to their handler but can sometimes seem a bit dominant, they are often used as police dogs, tracking dogs, guard and defence dog and avalanche dog.

Colour

The German Shepherd is found in three different types of coat: rough coat, long hair, long rough coat. The coat can be black, iron grey, ash or monochrome, with regular brown, yellow to light grey markings. A black deck is very common.

Physical features

Body

Long, firm neck. Deep chest. Well protruding ribs. Flat, muscular back, slightly sloping towards the hip. Pronounced, rather far apart hip bones.

Average weight

The average weight of the dog is between 30 to 40 kg (male) 22 to 32 kg (female dog).

Height at withers

60 to 65 cm (male) 55 to 60 cm (female dog).

Approach to training

The German Shepherd is a good student and loves to learn and train together with his boss. During training it is often best to work a lot with your voice, as the German Shepherd often feels comfortable hearing his boss’ voice. During training, practice and play must be alternated at a considerable pace. Stay in charge of the dog and stay consistent even though the German Shepherd is so affectionate he will sometimes test his boss and show some dominant behaviour.

Dog sports

The German Shepherd is one of the few dogs that can participate in a lot of dog sports. Like: Flyball, Agility, Obedience, Tracking, Police dog etc.

German Shepherds are suitable for owners who:

  • Are looking for a dog that needs a lot of exercise
  • Like to participate in dog sports
  • Do not mind this dog needs a lot of exercise even as he gets older
