Dachshund
The Dachshund is a clever, resourceful dog with a courageous and curious character. The short-haired Dachshund is very muscular and powerfully built with a firm head posture and an attentive expression. It is a cheerful companion dog, but also a courageous hunting dog that hunts with great passion and perseverance. As a domestic dog, his cheerfulness and vigilance are particularly striking; he is courageous, loyal and affectionate, but also smart and self-willed.
Characteristics
Colour
The coat of this Dachshund is short-haired and the most common colour is reddish brown and black and tan. However, you may sometimes see them with a chocolate brown colour or a tiger pattern.
Approach to training
Require consistent training. With the right approach to the training and lots of patience, the Dachshund can learn quite a bit, although they will never be completely obedient. A calm training where the owner focuses completely on the Dachshund and is very active is most beneficial, as this way the Dachshund knows it is all about him. Dachshunds can also protest enormously if they feel they have been unjustly punished. They are very persistent in their behaviour when they want something the owner doesn’t agree with. It is best to stay consistent and not give in too easily.
Dog sports
Because of the long back, jumping sports are not suitable for a Dachshund, as they may suffer from back pain.
Dachshunds are suitable for owners who:
- Are looking for a small and sweet but stubborn dog
- Love walking the dog a lot
