Character

The Russian Blue is a playful, lively cat that doesn’t like noise and crowds. They are independent and intelligent and get along with other pets and children. The Russian Blue doesn’t like strangers very much and can be reserved. They become very attached to their owners and can be quite shy. These purebred cats can be kept in a flat as well as in a large house with a garden, as long as they have room to play.

Physical Characteristics

Colour

Solid blue-grey colour with a silver glow. Kittens can have tabby markings, these disappear around the age of 1 year. The nose is blue-grey and the soles of the feet are dark lavender. If the Russian Blue is exposed to the sun for a long time, the coat can discolour to brown. In some associations, the colour variants Black and White are recognised within the breed. However, the Russian Blue is still predominantly blue/grey and short-haired.

Body, legs and tail

The body of the Russian Blue is long and muscular. The bone structure is fine to average. The legs are long and strong and the feet are round or oval. The tail is long and straight. The tail is rather thick and tapers to a point.

Head, ears and eyes

The head is short and wedge-shaped with a flat skull and a straight forehead. The nose is straight and the ears are placed straight on the head. The ears are broad and are slightly rounded at the top. The large ears are a little hairy on the inside and are only covered by very short hairs on the outside. The chin is strong and lies in a straight line with the tip of the nose. The large eyes are bright green, almond-shaped and set wide apart. In kittens, the eye colour varies from yellow to green.

Coat

The coat is short, dense and very fine. You don’t have to brush the coat too often, otherwise, you might damage the undercoat. Brushing the coat once a week is sufficient. In the moult period, you can brush the coat with a soft brush.
